Roo Lan Health Care is Lacey’s original skilled-nursing facility and has been caring for members of the Thurston County community for more than 45 years – we’re proud to say that multiple generations of the same family have received care here!
Our story begins in the late 1960’s when Mr. Root and Mr. Langdon, two longtime operators of nursing homes, decided to open a new nursing facility along Carpenter Road. They took the first three letters of their last names for the new business, thus “Roo Lan Gardens” opened its doors to residents for the first time on October 1, 1971. In 1974, Roo Lan Gardens became the first nursing home in Lacey to be licensed as a skilled nursing facility. This permitted us to change with the times by caring for citizens of the area on a short-term basis – with the goal to return home eventually.
A Legacy of Care
Still locally-owned today, Dr. George Zerr and Craig LeVee purchased Roo Lan in 1985. Until his retirement Dr. Zerr consulted with residents at both Roo Lan Health Care Skilled Nursing & Rehab as well as the Lodges Memory Care. Mr. LeVee is currently actively involved in the community’s operations: his and Dr. Zerr’s joint philosophy of a family environment permeates every aspect of Roo Lan. By staying a “family run” business, Roo Lan can avoid the multiple layers of corporate red-tape that often obstruct other facilities’ operations. Being locally owned has the added benefit of enhanced staff retention – our people feel like a part of one big family along with our residents! In this day and age, it speaks volumes that many of our nurses, aides and administrative staff have been with us 10 to 20 years or more!
Trusted Skilled Care
Beginning with the opening of our skilled nursing facility 45 years ago, throughout the decades our community has been guided by two simple principles. First, the best people provide the best care. Our veteran staff of nurses, therapists and skilled caregivers have worked together for years. Because of this ‘continuum of care’, we pride ourselves on providing the most coordinated approach to skilled care in the region.
Second, Roo Lan will always provide quality care to our patients regardless of background, ethnicity or finances. We offer both short and long term skilled nursing, hospice and respite care with one goal in mind: to provide healthcare with a heart! As a family-owned facility, we feel an obligation to treat you and your loved ones like family. Known by many as the preferred care provider for our local military veterans, Roo Lan’s skilled nursing is the only facility in Thurston county to hold a contract with the Veteran’s Administration.
Safe & Affordable Memory Care
When Dr. Zerr & Craig LeVee opened our Memory Care Lodges in the mid 1990’s, they didn’t do it to make money. They saw a need in our community for a family-focused approach to dementia care which meant safety as well as financial security for the resident and his/her family. Thanks to Dr. Zerr’s & Mr. LeVee’s vision, Roo Lan continues to balance great quality of care with an affordable, fixed-rate approach to pricing; bringing peace of mind to the whole family.
Nestled in the shade of old-growth evergreens on a quiet cul de sac, The Lodges’ smaller size and circular layout enhance patient care and minimize confusion. Both Lodge buildings’ residents are continuously monitored by licensed staff consisting of caregivers and 24/7 licensed practical nurses. At Roo Lan, our residents and staff are family – we care for your loved ones’ just like we would our own!
